ÇORUH RIVER
Grade 5
Location
Up to 5 days kayaking or rafting on a high volume pool drop river. The river increases in difficulty through the 5 days from grade 3 to sections of grade 5 at peak flow. There are a number of side streams that can also be run, eg Barhal, Oltu, Tortum, Ovit (all Grade 4). Road access is available at all times, allowing easy inspection/portage.
Peak flow is in late May and early June, by mid July all of the harder rapids are a grade easier.
Also in the north-east there are a number of steep creeks, such as the Fırtına and Maçka, flowing north into the Black Sea. This area has high summer rainfall so flows are fairly constant throughout the summer.
ÇORUH RIVER TRIP
The Çoruh River in north-east Turkey is recognized as one of the top ten white water rivers in the world, with its high volume rapids (up to grade 5 in May and June) fed by the snow-melt from the eastern Black Sea mountains in the north-east of Turkey. It flows through spectacular canyons and narrow fertile valleys or orchards and tiny paddy fields, past ancient ruined castles all set against a backdrop of magnificent rugged mountains and traditional village life virtually untouched by tourism.
We have been running regular expeditions on the Çoruh since 1992, and we are still the only Turkish company to offer regular trips on this river.
We run 4-day and 5-day camping expeditions during May and June. We also offer 7-day expeditions including trekking, for private groups.
LESSONS
For individuals and small groups of beginners we are able to arrange kayak lessons on a private basis on the Dalaman River.
